Ashtead Learning Difficulties Action Group – ALDAG – is a group of people locally who aim to encourage understanding, acceptance and the involvement of people with a learning difficulty in local community life. Joseph and I have been members for seven years now and Joseph enjoys a fortnightly youth group, the Conquerors’ Club, where he can meet with his friends and have fun and activities. These young people need support to play a part in life that most people take for granted.
St. George’s Christian Centre in Ashtead already runs a café on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; however, since the beginning of September, members of ALDAG under the guidance of a manager and a team of volunteers have been using the café to run Café Aldag. The young people have a smart uniform and all have been encouraged to use their skills to the best of their ability.

Joseph works in the café on Mondays; he and his friend Goran are the chief sandwich-makers, Matt arranges the salads, Hannah and Louise take and serve the orders, and Andrew helps with the shopping and is in charge of the washing-up. Joseph is loving it and is very proud of his achievements.
So if you want a coffee or a lunch on Mondays or Tuesdays, you know where to visit – Café Aldag in St. George’s Christian Centre, Barnett Wood Lane, Ashtead. It is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
We also congratulate Joseph on his recent 25th birthday, celebrated recently in the church with a birthday cake, enjoyed by all, with enough left over for Joseph to take home afterwards.
