Secretary's Letter

TypistIsn’t life strange, you never know what is going to happen. The past few weeks have been quite traumatic in our house. We did not expect to be heading for Moorfields Eye Hospital at 6.30 a.m. on a Wednesday morning for George to have a torn retina fixed. What a marvellous place that hospital is and I am pleased to report that the sight is returning and hopefully will soon be back to an acceptable quality that will enable him to live a normal life once more. It certainly was frightening when he lost the sight of his left eye. Thank you to all those who sent cards, enquired about him and have given us lifts in the past few weeks, it has been much appreciated.

Last week we spent in Cornwall with friends and one of the places we visited was Boscastle. I am sure you will recall the terrible disaster there when the whole village was under water and cars were washed into the harbour. Some of the houses have marks to show just how high the water rose and it is quite amazing that no lives were lost. There are many accounts of the day’s happenings in the visitor centre and each one begins “The day dawned just like any other”. It made me think that this is what happens to all of us almost every day, each day we do not know what God has in store for us. I wonder what He has in store for us at Epsom as we begin to reassemble after the summer break.

Harvest Festival is 5th October, the Church will as usual be decorated with flowers and this year our charity collection will be for the Alzheimer’s Society. Epsom is holding a Mental Health Week from 5th to 12th October so this fits in very well. There will be envelopes available for your gifts. If you have not picked up one already there are pamphlets giving details of all the weeks events in the foyer of the Church. At the Harvest Service Claire Robertson from the Alzheimer’s Society will be speaking, this is important work so we should support it generously. The Harvest Lunch will be at Ewell after the Service; I am told a delicious meal is being prepared so don’t forget to sign the list in the foyer if you would like to attend.

Arrangements are almost ready for the half-term Activity Day on 28th October. This year our theme is “Creation” and we are arranging a visit from “Mill Cottage Farm Experience” who are bringing a selection of small animals for the children to make friends with. There will be the usual craft tables and lots of fun and we hope this year will be as successful as in previous years.
