News of the Family

People chattingHow good it was to hear from many friends, some with connections covering many years. They were so appreciative of being remembered with Christmas gifts and greetings.

In recording the death of Peggy Smith earlier this month at the age of 97, we give thanks for her life and her years of service for our church for well over thirty years. She served the Women’s Church Council so devotedly and was our Treasurer for many years.

I have just heard of the death of Dorothy Dobby on Wednesday, 21st January. Again, Dorothy was a most active and dependable member of the Women’s Church Council for many years until she suffered a severe stroke more than nine years ago.

We shall remember with our love and sympathy both Sheila and George and Frank and their families at this time.

Since Joe and Peggy Wilson returned from their recent cruise, Joe has had another fall, resulting in bruising and a cut forehead.

We remember Marjorie, Sonia (who has written a contribution, printed below) and Lynne with our love and prayers, and also those who have been suffering severe colds or viruses in the recent wintry weather.

We rejoice that Phemie is looking so much better and is busying herself in so many ways. We sincerely hope that a hospital visit early in February will bring encouraging news. And Alan had an appointment on Friday, and things are still looking good; his next check-up will be in two months’ time. Phemie and Alan, you are so much in our caring thoughts and may you be richly blessed.

              THE CHARM                                  Sonia Bentzon

              October Sundays have their mysteries,
              Such warm, sad afternoons.
              A sense of broken fountains
              And a flash of emerald.
One would not look for beauty in such days,
Nor in the fragrant pastoral days of Spring,
Nor in the golden honeyed summer times.
But like a tremulous hand laid on a sleeve
              Troubling the air with rumours,
They will not answer to your questionings
Although the shadows hold such potency.
You’d think you might be richer all your life
If you but held the key.
