This is the last letter for your magazines that I will be writing. I must give due thanks to the editors who always allowed me to submit my piece at the very last minute!
As I write this, I have the sound of constant buzzing in my ears. It’s not the computer or electricity wires, rather it is the sound of bumble bees trying to escape the confines of the conservatory where they have become trapped. Some bees became resident in a hole on the side of the manse, and several managed to find their way inside. The more they tried to escape, the less able they were to find a way out, even with open windows. The buzzing to our ears became ever more angry-sounding and desperate. We managed to help a few to escape but most simply wore themselves out. Even now after they are all gone, we think we can still hear them!
Instinct often drives us to behave in a similar fashion, doesn’t it? Elijah was like that, trying to do battle with the prophets of Baal on an ever-escalating scale. Peter was a bit like that too, always stepping in before he was ready and making a fool of himself. And Martha, rushing around doing things....... Sometimes we have to stop doing everything, sit down and think things through. Jesus frequently did this, didn’t he? He often went away to pray.
It seems to me that we are at such a point now, where we must avoid doing the bumble bee thing. For Peter and me, the next several months will be a time of change, likewise for the Epsom and Ewell URCs. Frantic activity won’t get us anywhere, but thoughtful and prayerful activity will help us to make the best possible decisions.
Thank you to all of you for the opportunity I’ve had to get to know you and to walk side by side with you for part of the journey. Peace be with you all.
Pat
