Save the Children

If you are a frustrated knitter and would like to knit, but have nobody to knit for, perhaps you would like to knit some hats for premature babies. ‘Save the Children’ would be very happy to receive these and have produced their own pattern, which is printed below. It does not take a lot of wool as you can use stripes of various colours.

With D.K. wool (NOT WHITE) and size 8 (4mm) needles cast on 48 sts, and work K1, P1 rib for 1 and a half inches.

Change to size 6 (5mm) needles and work in stocking stitch until it measures 5 inches from the start, ending on a purl row. Work in stripes of different colours as you go.
Shaping:
1st row: *K2 tog., K2 to the end. (36 sts)
2nd row: Purl.
3rd row: *K2 tog., K2 to the end. (27 sts)
4th Row: Purl.
5th row: *K2 tog., K1 to the end. (18 sts)
6th row: Purl.
7th row: K2 tog., to the end. (9 sts)
With a wool needle take up the 9 sts and secure. Then neaten the reverse side and sew seam.
Finally, take ‘turn-up’ about three-quarters of an inch, do not secure.
When you have completed it you can give it to Valerie Wood who will see that it goes to the right place.
