Elders' Letter

When I was a teenager, the church choir used to go out carol singing. I particularly remember one night when we sang outside a house only to find that the occupant was stone deaf. At our next venue we were told politely, but firmly, that they would like us to be quiet and not waken up the family. Then we had sixpence pressed upon us in spite of our protest that we were not collecting money. After that we did sing joyfully and finished the evening at Harrison and Ann Longhurst 's lovely house in College Road.

Times change but the joy of Christmas is always with us. I quote from Graham Kendrick's beautiful carol:

Like a candle flame,
flick'ring small in our darkness,
uncreated light
shines through infant eyes.

Stars and angels sing,
yet the earth sleeps in the shadows,
can this tiny spark
set a world on fire?

Yet his light shall shine
from our lives, Spirit blazing,
as we touch the flame
of his holy fire.

 God is with us, alleluia!

A very Happy Christmas to us all!
