Joint Elders' Meeting with the Moderator
|
There was a strong attendance of Elders from both congregations for this meeting with Nigel and our Interim Moderator, Peter.
Nigel congratulated both congregations on their Pastorate Profiles, commending them on their openness and Clarity.
He then asked us “ Where do you think we are ?” This rather took us aback as we seemed to be back at the last meeting with him when this question was well and truly answered. The Elders’ responses ranged from “ We are going around in circles” to “ We want this all done and dusted within a year.”
There was mutual agreement between the Epsom and Ewell Elders that we should get on with a professional survey of both buildings as this may have a heavy influence on a joint Church’s final location. This was rejected by both the Moderator and the Interim Moderator as being far too early in the project.
At this point Nigel pointed out that even with the merger of both the Epsom and Ewell congregations the total membership would not meet the scoping for a full-time Minister.
He introduced the possibility of the congregation of Tolworth, who now have a vacancy, being the other partner. This would constitute a full-time Pastorate.
It was suggested the Epsom and Ewell could start preparing their Scheme of Union at the next Elders’ Meeting when the Interim Moderator will be in the Chair.
Nigel stated that in view of the circumstances and because Tolworth were now involved, he would not consider declaring the vacancy until at least May 2010.
This left all the Elders very disappointed.
