The lovely baroque church at Steingaden, Bavaria, some 25 kms from Oberammergau, has a hole in the roof above the chancel.
Many years ago, in an attempt to illustrate to the uneducated farmers the concept of the Holy Spirit, a pigeon would be released through the hole to fly across the church and out through the door. One Sunday, when the time came for the release of the bird, the priest invoked, ‘Come, Holy Spirit.’ There was no response. Again, ‘Come, Holy Spirit.’ And again no response.
Then a voice from the roof called out, ‘The Holy Spirit can’t come. The cat has eaten him!’
Although this is a legend, our guide, who is something of a scholar, has been doing some research, and has found some documentation which seems to prove that this actually did happen!
