Memorial Service for Phemie - 12th November
|
It was beautiful. Phemie would have hated it, as she would not have wished for a memorial service, but we had to do it, and I am sure that she will have forgiven us. It was a gathering of those who knew and loved her, representing the many and varied aspects of her selfless life. There were tears, but with them a sense of happiness for having known her. Revd. Barbara Pearson, who conducted the service, shared with us her memories of Phemie and of her final hours, and Tom Lockett spoke of memories of Phemie at Epsom U.R.C. I had come to know Phemie well, but there were still things I hadn’t known about her. Phemie’s niece and great-nephew in New Zealand sent separate messages, assuring us that we were in their thoughts. The music was beautiful, and the singing was hearty; but for me the most poignant part of the service came at the end when we listened in utter silence to the plaintive ‘Mull of Kintyre’, with dear Phemie smiling down at us from a picture on the screen. A very special service for a very special lady.
