Due to the delayed September meeting, this month’s report covers two meetings. On 29th September, our venue was Þe Olde King’s Head in Church Street—which is how I advertised the name in the October NewsLetter. Now, who noticed the strange letter at the start of the name?? It is the correct portrayal of the letter commonly drawn as a ‘Y’, as in ‘Ye Olde …’, and is known as a thorn, pronounced as ‘th’ in ‘thick’ or ‘the’ (unvoiced or voiced). In later script, the word ‘the’ was often abbreviated to ye, but should still be pronounced as ‘the’. In modern typeface it appears as Þ (upper case) or þ (lower case), but when this is shown in an ‘Olde English’ font, these print as Þ or þ. Here is a table showing these four characters in a larger font: Font Arial Old English Upper case: Þ Þ Lower case: þ þ There is a lot more in Wikipedia, if you care to look—that’s where I went! Anyway, we were pleased to welcome a new member, Ruth Broder, to our number.
Ruth must have enjoyed it as she joined us for the October meeting on 20th, brought forward from 27th where it would have clashed with the Afternoon Fellowship (sorry, Heather!). We were at the Chessington Oak, where we were able to give a warm welcome to Alan and Monica Freeman.
We were grateful to the circumstances which forced the cancellation of Alan’s golf match, enabling him to accompany Monica, and were pleased that he had Archie and Beryl, our resident golf aficionados, to talk to! Later on we were joined by Rosemary, but as there was by that time a 45-minute delay in the kitchen, she had just a sweet. Our next meeting will be held on 17th November and will be held at a venue yet to be determined. And please remember that the December meeting will be held on Thursday, 8th December, so as to clear this obvious distraction out of the way well before Christmas! |
